GreenYellow South Africa and AJP Group partner for 4.6 MW Solar PV Installation rollout across 10 Shopping Malls in the East Rand

Johannesburg, 13 March 2025: GreenYellow South Africa has officially commenced a 4.6 MW Solar PV project with AJP Group, a diversified investment and property management company specialising in the development and operation of commercial real estate. With a strong presence in the retail sector, AJP Group focuses on delivering innovative, sustainable solutions to enhance property value and operational efficiency.
Spanning 10 sites, this large-scale initiative will feature a combination of rooftop and carport solar PV installations designed for self-consumption. Generating 7.5 million kWh annually, totalling 150 million kWh over the 20-year contract tenor. The project will reduce reliance on traditional coal-fired grid electricity and optimise energy costs. With over 7,500 solar panels installed, it will help avoid 6,952 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year – that’s the equivalent to planting 34,800 trees annually – reinforcing AJP Group’s sustainability strategy and marking a significant step toward a greener future.
The project is set to begin construction on 26 March 2025, at AJP’s Brentwood Park Mall in Benoni. All 10 shopping malls are expected to be completed by September 2025, ensuring that AJP Group’s properties can begin benefiting from clean, cost-efficient solar energy before the end of the year.
Recognising the complexity and responsibility associated with owning and managing energy assets, AJP Group chose GreenYellow South Africa to fully operate and maintain the solar PV plants to ensure a seamless, hassle-free solution that suites their operational needs. The project showcases GreenYellow’s expertise in multi-site and active-site installations, ensuring no impact on AJP Group’s daily operations.
By leveraging GreenYellow’s expertise in solar PV alongside AJP Group’s strong market presence, the partnership will deliver reliable clean energy to their retail properties, advancing sustainability and long-term energy resilience.
Through GreenYellow’s #SHIFTProduction model, AJP Group will access renewable energy without the need for upfront capital investment or the operational and manitenance burden. The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is expected to deliver significant cost savings of approximately 120% over the lifespan of the project compared to traditional energy expenditure.
To mark the official launch of the project, representatives from GreenYellow South Africa and AJP Group gathered at the AJP Campus in Kempton Park for a ribbon cutting ceremony of Friday, 21 February, to celebrate the beginning of this transformative journey toward energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction.
Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Michael Ilias, Company Director of GreenYellow South Africa, emphasied the strategic importance of this collaboration: “Partnering with AJP Group on this solar PV initiative reaffirms our dedication to advancing clean and affordable energy solutions. This collaboration is not only about reducing dependence on grid electricity but also about delivering substantial long-term financial and environmental benefits. We are eager to see the positive impact of these installations, driving both operational efficiency and sustainability goals across AJP Group’s commercial properties. Signing this power purchase agreement is more than just a contract; it is a testament to shared values, commitment to sustainability, and the power of long-term collaboration.”
Reinforcing this commitment, Mr. John Baladakis, Group CEO at AJP Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “We look forward to this partnership, and today we celebrate this milestone with the GreenYellow team. AJP Group has always prioritised innovation and sustainability in our property developments, and this collaboration will further enhance our commitment to reducing environmental impact while delivering significant value to our stakeholders.”
